Freshwater Trout

Lake trout and most other trout live in freshwater lakes and rivers exclusively, while there are others, such as the steelhead, a form of the coastal rainbow trout, that can spend two or three years at sea before returning to fresh water to spawn (a habit more typical of salmon). Arctic char and brook trout are part of the char family. Trout are an important food source for humans and wildlife, including brown bears, birds of prey such as eagles, and other animals.

Trout Fishing BC Regulations

All Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations in effect in British Columbia, (except for salmon fishing and fishing in National Parks), are published every two years as the Regulations Synopsis. Anglers should become familiar with these regulations before going fishing. Please note that a Freshwater Fishing License is required when fishing for Trout in British Columbia.

The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation receives 100% of the surcharge revenue collected from angling licence sales to provide grants for fish conservation projects.

To catch trout, use lightweight tackle, and learn to read stream currents. Natural bait is highly successful for catching trout, though some baits only work with hatchery-raised trout. The best techniques, lures and tackle to use may vary between the type of trout as well as the type of water such as rivers or lakes.

While trout can be caught with a normal rod and reel, fly fishing is a distinctive method developed primarily for trout, and now extended to other species. Lake trout and most other trout live in freshwater lakes and rivers exclusively. Trout are an important food source for humans and wildlife, including brown bears, birds of prey such as eagles, and other animals.

A BC Freshwater Fishing Licence is available in a range of options from single day to annual licences that last all year, from April 1 through March 31st.
